Interview With The Founder Of Starch Slides

Do you ever come across a brand that totally blows your mind?! This is me when it comes to Starch Slides. Did you know that the average american will throw out over 65 pounds of textiles ever year. Hhmmm let me think… that is about 11 million tons of waste in our landfills today!

Starch Slides are solving this ongoing issue by making comfortable, eco friendly slides and here is the best bit… They are made out of secondhand button up shirts. For every shirt, they make an average of  1 small slide, 2 mediums and a large. The shirt is lined with vegan leather- to protect the fabric and keep your feet secure and supported, and the sole is made from a mix of raw, eco friendly materials. Another thing I love about Starch Slides is that they package there slides in a raw jute backpack which eliminates the wastage of a shoe box!

Today I am back, interviewing the creator of Starch Slides, Shannon Crowley- I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed interviewing her!

What are your main aims of Starch Slides?

Shannon Crowley- Starch Slides

We want to bring awareness to the textile waste in our landfills today. I come from a fashion background and wanted to do something cool, fashionable but sustainable.

What inspires your slides the most?

The customers. Seeing how women are styling them, and making every pair unique to their look is what keeps me going every single day.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Have fun. I am a big believer in making sure that you enjoy what you are doing, while times get stressful, if overall you are not having fun doing what you are doing it’s time for a change.

What made you start Starch Slides?

I wanted to start a brand that is sustainable and up cycled without looking granola. Starch Slides are simple, a little masculine and come in size small, medium, and large. They are just such an easy shoe with a cool story that is fun to share. People love being able to answer “thanks, they are made from used men’s shirts!” When people say, “Cute shoes!”. I think that is so much fun to see.

Where do you see Starch Slides in the future? Let’s say 4-5 years.

I want to keep growing, expand styles, keep growing the team, and still enjoy every single day I get to do what I love.

Who inspires you most?

So many people inspire me, I am lucky to have such a wonderful support team around me, my family, friends, boyfriend are so inspirational. My mom is someone who never turns down an adventure. She and I love traveling the world together and she just went skydiving with her friends a few months ago (she is in her 60’s) I think her need to explore all of life’s adventures is so inspirational and a big part of who I am as a person, and as a business owner.

What is behind the name ‘Starch Slides’?Starch Slides

The name comes from the fact that our slides are made from up-cycled mens’ shirts. You starch a button-up shirt, so Starch Slides it is!

What sets Starch Slides aside from other brands?

I think Starch Slides is selling a way of life, if you look at our IG @starchslides you get a very clear idea of who we are. We are not trying to push a sale, we want Starch Slides to feel like an adventure and a community.

Honestly… what is not to love about Starch Slides? They have thought of it all, right down to the packaging! These slides would go perfect with skinny jeans and a tee or with a beachy romper. I totally recommend that you go and check them out here for more incredible slides!

Thank you so much Shannon for allowing me to interview you for my Conscious Wardrobe segment, I absolutely LOVE your concept and what you do!
